Activity Analysis
Every morning I start my day by drinking coffee, before I can enjoy my coffee I have to open my kitchen cabinet to find a coffee cup. When I reach for the cabinet handle I am producing shoulder flexion to be able to reach the appropriate height. Once my shoulder is flexed and my elbow is extended I can grasp the handle and then proceed to flex my elbow to pull the door open. The plane in which shoulder flexion and elbow flexion and extension occur in is the sagittal plane and the axis is the frontal axis. The osteokinematics of shoulder flexion and elbow flexion and extension in this movement are open chained kinematics. The arthrokinematics for shoulder flexion is the convex part of the humeral head gliding in a posterior direction in the concave segment of the glenoid fossa of the scapula. The prime movers of shoulder flexion are the anterior deltoid and the coracobrachialis muscles. The prime movers produce concentric contractions for this movement.
