Session 28 K.C.

In this session something I learned is how important health literacy is. Health literacy is not a new concept to me but after listening to professor Flick share her knowledge of the subject I have a better understanding of it. If a client does not understand what you are asking them or what they are supposed to be doing they could potentially harm themselves or someone else. This concept goes for everyone in the medical profession too. I think this can be easily overlooked by medical professionals and there should be more advocacy for health literacy. This could be done by making changes in how patient/client paperwork is worded as well as how information is presented to clients.
In this session I also learned about the three different types of interventions that are aimed to reduce health threats. These types of interventions are: primary, secondary and tertiary. Primary intervention is an intervention that is done to prevent an injury or disease from happening. Secondary intervention can be performed as a screening for a disease or ailment that can catch it early on and attempt to lower the impact of it to a client's health. Tertiary intervention is what can be seen as intervention that aims to reduce the impact of an ongoing ailment and help the client improve their quality of life. These types of interventions are important for occupational therapy and for being able to help clients in the most appropriate way based on their circumstances.
