Media Project

For the media project I was assigned a cupcake pan to create an innovative way to incorporate into my assigned client's intervention. The client's case study I was assigned to is named Maurice, he is an 83 year old man who is a retired dairy farmer and also has Parkinson's disease. Maurice was diagnosed with Parkinson's 10 years ago and he also has very poor vision due to his bilateral cataracts. He currently is living in a skilled nursing facility due to his wife being injured an unable to care for him at the moment. Since he has impaired vision my initial ideas for creating a therapeutic activity with the cupcake pan would not have been the best fit for Maurice. I finally came to the conclusion that I could still incorporate my initial ideas for Maurice into my design when I found a pair of children's large tweezers at the store. I wasn't looking for anything like them and I saw them and immediately knew that they would be how I could improve my design. I chose an activity that would help Maurice with his fine motor skills since his Parkinson's makes using his hands difficult sometimes. The activity consists of large, neon pom poms, the cupcake pan and the large tweezers. The tweezers are used to pick up the pom poms and depending on how Maurice is able to see them and grasp them they could be swapped out for different objects with different shapes and/or weights. My hope for participating in this activity would be for Maurice to maintain the ability to feed himself finger foods and that the use of the large tweezers might introduce him to new ways to pick up his food or objects on days that his hands are especially bothering him. This project challenged my creative thinking and I really enjoyed it. By having the assigned case study the project was a good simulation of how working in the field really is and that not everyone can have a clear cut plan when it comes to their intervention design.
