Hierarchy of Mobility Skills

The order for restoring confidence in mobility based on increasing activity demands is in the following order: bed mobility, mat transfer, wheelchair transfer, bed transfer, functional ambulation for ADL, toilet and tub transfer, car transfer, functional ambulation for community mobility, and community mobility and driving. The order that these occur in did not come as much of a surprise to me. I think it is appropriate that bed mobility is the base of the hierarchy of mobility skills since it is a  basic skill in preparing for transfers. Each of the skills within the hierarchy seem to build upon each other and are necessary skills to obtain before moving to the next level of mobility.
I agree with the sequence of this hierarchy because I think it appropriately builds confidence in skills that promote safe mobility. I have seen this practiced in my previous observation experiences in an acute care setting and in an outpatient setting. Starting at the base level or assessing an individual to see what their base line of mobility skills is important because then a therapist can appropriately select what mobility skills to focus on with the client.
