Blissful Ordinariness
When first hearing the term "blissful ordinariness" it is easy to assume that it is the same as "ordinary routine". If you are asked to take a moment of your day to truly think about what it means, it proposes a new idea, or at least for me it did. Everyone has a different idea of what "ordinary" looks like, especially when it is associated with their routines and roles, and I think this is a huge aspect of what makes occupational therapy so interesting to me. Occupational therapists look at what you are tasked with doing or what you want to do each day and then assess how you do those things, and in some instances how you are unable to do them. The ability to participate in these roles of life are often taken for granted and only realized when a disruption arises. Occupational therapists help to restore "blissful ordinariness" for their clients. They do so by forming a therapeutic relationship with the client and learn what an ordinary day looks like for them. OT services are geared to see the client as a whole and what makes them their own person versus just seeing a problem that a client has. This is what really sets the profession of occupational therapy apart from others, and why I think OT is a vital component to the health care world.
