Childhood Obesity and OT
Before listening to the podcast episode "Psychosocial Impact of Childhood Obesity" I was unaware of just how much occupational therapy could help in those situations. I have always heard about the ways of "battling" childhood obesity which are said to be promotion of diet and exercise. I also will admit that I have seen the stigma first hand that goes along with obesity through every stage of life, not just in children. The guest on the podcast, Brittany Saviers, sheds new light on the various things that could play roles in childhood obesity.
In the episode the Brittany Saviers expresses 6 main factors that are associated with childhood obesity which are: low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, increased suicidal thoughts, weight based bullying, attitudinal barriers and social exclusion. All of these might have already been things that people could have guessed to be things associated but in the podcast they are put into a new perspective, at least they were for me. These factors all seem to build upon or snowball into each other and are expressed to be all things that OT can help a client manage and/or work through. Saviers expresses the need to have the issue of childhood obesity to be further dissected, not just something that is addressed with diet and exercise. There needs to be intervention and preventative initiatives put into place to help society, especially children, to find their outlets to give everyone the occupational justice that is deserved.
