Biomechanics- "Man From The South"

After reading the excerpt from "Man From The South" and thinking about how the involved parties would be impacted if the bet was lost, I have though of several ways that the soldier's life would be affected. If the soldier lost his pinky form his left hand he would have a lot of trouble with his grip strength. Since he is a soldier I think it would be important for him to be able to have full capability of his grip strength for both hands to perform his daily tasks. These activities in his daily routine that could be challenged would be putting on his clothes/uniform, grooming himself, carrying his equipment or operating equipment, and even turning door knobs. A way that the soldier could regain his independence after loosing the bet and his pinky would be to work on his grip strength and potentially using some assistive equipment in his everyday life. An example of the potential assistive equipment could be a grip aid on the handles of his toothbrush and hair brush. This modification to his grooming/ personal hygiene tools would help his regain independence in doing ADLs.

I also thought about how is grip strength would be impacted if he lost the bet. I like how you mentioned it wouldn’t only effect his job, but it would also effect getting dressed and even opening doors. I had the same idea with adaptive equipment such as a grip aid for his hair and toothbrush. With access to these things he would regain independence!
