Posture and Body Mechanics

Having proper posture and body mechanics are very important. If someone has faulty posture and body mechanics they are at risk for injuring themself. One reason to correct these is to decrease the risk of injury, because having poor posture can put unnecessary strains on muscles and joints. Along with decreasing the risk of injury, correcting body mechanics can reduce the risk of falling. Teaching correct posture and body mechanics can also improve efficiency in completing daily tasks, whether they are at work or home. A fourth reason for helping someone correct these components is because proper posture and body mechanics can surprisingly improve organ function in the body.
An example of when someone may be taught proper posture and body mechanics as an intervention is if their job requires them to sit at a desk for extended periods of time. This kind of job would really take a toll on a person's body if they are not using correct posture and could lead to many other physical problems. Another example would be if a client has a job that requires them to be on their feet and move boxes or heavy objects throughout the day. In this case correct body mechanics would be very important for lifting, especially since it would be a repetitive movement for this individual. Posture and body mechanics may seem insignificant at first thought but they are essential for the human body to be able to function effectively and safely.
