Neuro Note #2
I chose to watch Breea's story on YouTube about her diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis for my second neuro note assignment. Through this 15 minute video you can see Breea's journey from her initial day in the hospital to 8 months after. Breea at the time was 18, a high school student and cheerleader when she experienced her acute severe onset of Multiple Sclerosis. On the morning of December 8 she woke up feeling off and later that day passed out and woke up to being paralyzed on her left side which also included her loosing her vision in her left eye and difficulty speaking and swallowing. Even though this sudden onset changed Breea's life in a matter of hours, she was very determined to overcome the challenges and had a strong support system backing her. The video shows many aspects of Breea's journey and includes her therapy sessions, her friends coming to the hospital to visit her, and many of the victories that she made through her recovery process.
By watching Breea's story I learned more about multiple sclerosis and was able to form questions to do some research on my own. I learned that Multiple Sclerosis typically presents itself in individuals between the ages of 20 to 40 and that there is no cure for this disease but therapy can lessen the symptoms. In the video I also was able to observe how an occupational therapist could provide services for an individual who has multiple sclerosis. I would certainly recommend this video. It was only 15 minutes but it provided so much insight into what the recovery process may look like for someone who experiences acute severe multiple sclerosis. It was interesting too since Breea was only 18 when this happened and seeing how her recovery progressed. I enjoyed seeing how supportive Breea's mother was during this process and I thought it was very touching to see her mother helping her do back bends and celebrating every progress victory (small or large).
